Quiznos or Subway?

Hey everyone! Okay, so we all know Subway’s very catchy $5 foot-long promotion. It gets stuck in my head every time I hear it. Anyway, Subway’s competitor, Quiznos, is trying to take that same idea that Subway came up with but instead they are offering a $4 12-inch sub. Not only are they trying to give you a better deal but they are also trying to use a comically suggestive sex theme in their commercials with phrases such as, “Say it sexy” and “Put it in me”. The reason why I brought this up, even though this may be more on the advertising side than public relations, is do you think that they should have just came up with a totally different tactic? Quiznos has always been behind Subway in sales. Quiznos Chief Marketing Officer Rebecca Steinfort said, “Our main competition is Subway, which is an 800-pound gorilla. We may be 200 pounds, but they're 800.” My thing is, when it comes to their strategy of selling $4 12-inch subs or any of their sandwiches is that I feel that they are trying to be too much like Subway. I feel that they aren’t being original. Also if you’ve noticed, their recent advertisements have had something to do with Subway, such as their past ad of Quiznos beats Subway 4 to 1. I feel that they are concentrating too much on what Subway is doing and they aren’t making a distinguishable brand for themselves. It’s difficult for Quiznos to free itself from the shadow of Subway when they keep comparing themselves to Subway. When I see commercials for Quiznos, really all I think about is Subway. Maybe I’m just biased because I worked at Subway in high school. I don’t know. So, what do you guys think?

Talk to you soon!

  1. Kiah, I think that you are not looking at the bigger picture. We have seen this type of dog eat dog competition between leading corporate giants sense the beginning of time. The more jabs Pepsi threw at Coca Cola, the more right hooks Coca Cola threw back. Almost every hip-hop artist has had some type of battle with another artist. Do you remeber how Ja Rule lost his career due to 50 Cent? 50 Cent literally destroyed Ja Rule with his lyrics. Every piece of dignity that Ja Rule had was slandered and hung out to dry in front of the entire hip-hop world. There was no coming back for him.

I think consumers enjoy the competition. It makes them feel special because they have people fighting for their attention. Businesses want to be the most popular among consumers. If Quiznos has to show a little tail to get some attention, then so be it. Subway needs to kick back and stop being “girly girls.” They run around on their commercials like there is not a war going on.

    Come on Subway, fight back!

Subway has a cocky attitude. Hypothetically speaking, Subway has an automatic car wash, and Quiznos has a hand wash car wash. Subway does not want to give Quiznos the time of day. Quiznos has the right to spice up the game and wake up consumers.

Subway is more concerned with giving a certain amount of items on their sandwiches because they focus on calories and helping people loose weight. “Blah blah blah!”

People are hungry out there. Quiznos gives the customer a bang for their buck. They add more oven-roasted meals with more cheese, meat and what ever else you want. Subway should respond because Quiznos is attracting some attention.

  2. I think it's pretty stupid too. Quiznos doesn't need to do that anyway. They're way better than Subway! This is just another example of a company attempting to one-up the competition. Nothing new here. Just one of the oldest marketing tricks in the book.

  3. Couldn't agree more with your post. $4 subs puts Quiznos in a discount space they cannot compete with Subway. They are discounting themselves into bankruptcy. Just look at the domestic automakers.

  4. Are they serious? $4...really? You are definitely right when you said that Quizno's needs to be original. I understand trying to outdo the competition but come on!
